Our Story

Rooted in Heritage

From our humble beginnings to a community of more than 450 shareholders today, NNAI remains committed to preserving our heritage while embracing growth and opportunity.

Our History

NNAI was established in November 1972 following the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) in 1971. At its founding, 206 original shareholders, primarily of Dena’ina Athabaskan heritage, were issued Class A common stock.

Today, NNAI represents more than 454 shareholders, with most continuing to hold Class A stock. Our shareholders live across the United States and internationally, reflecting both the growth and enduring legacy of our community.

Our Shareholders

NNAI maintains two classes of shares. Class A shareholders are Alaska Native descendants who hold voting rights and receive dividends. These shares may be inherited or converted to Class B stock when passed to non-Native beneficiaries. Class B shareholders, currently numbering more than 40, are non-Native descendants who receive dividends but do not hold voting rights.
